How To Measure
How to Measure Yourself for a Dress
To achieve accurate measurements, stand straight with your feet together and arms slightly raised. Always keep the tape level while measuring.
Bust:
- Wrap the measuring tape around your back.
- Bring it around to the front, aligning it at the fullest part of your bust.
- Note the measurement.
Waist:
- Locate your natural waistline, about one inch above your belly button or the narrowest part of your torso.
- Wrap the tape around this area and ensure it’s snug but not tight.
- Record the measurement.
Hips:
- Position the tape around the widest part of your hips and buttocks.
- Ensure the tape lies flat and level, then measure.
- Write down the number.
Additional Tips:
- Measure over undergarments you plan to wear with the dress, ensuring the tape is snug but not too tight.
- If wearing shapewear or specialty undergarments, measure over those for better accuracy.
- Many formal dresses run smaller than everyday clothing. If you’re between sizes, opt for the larger one to allow for alterations.
- Keep in mind that sizing varies between designers; always refer to their specific charts.
How to Zipper a Dress
- Put the dress on and adjust it into a comfortable position.
- Before zipping, check for any hanger straps or strings that might obstruct the zipper.
- Attach the hook-and-eye closure first (if applicable), then begin zipping.
- Alternatively, you can zip first and secure the hook-and-eye afterward.
- Slowly pull the zipper upward, ensuring the fabric stays smooth and aligned.
Helpful Hints:
- Many dresses feature concealed zippers. You may need assistance to hold the fabric together as you zip.
- If the zipper gets stuck, try applying a small amount of soap or zipper wax to ease movement.
How to Lace a Dress
To properly lace a dress, ensure the person’s back remains straight by having them place their hands on their hips. Follow these steps:
- Thread the laces through the top loops on each side of the dress.
- After threading the first set of loops, pull the laces evenly to align them.
- Pass the lace through a loop on the left side.
- Move to the right side and thread the lace through a loop, skipping one.
- Continue alternating sides, skipping a loop on each pass.
- Once you’ve laced all skipped loops, go back and thread through the remaining loops on each side.
- Tighten the laces by pulling gently on the crisscross sections (visual examples can be helpful here).
- Tie a bow to secure the lacing.
- Tuck any excess lace inside the dress.
