How To Measure

How to Measure Yourself for a Dress

To achieve accurate measurements, stand straight with your feet together and arms slightly raised. Always keep the tape level while measuring.

Bust:

  1. Wrap the measuring tape around your back.
  2. Bring it around to the front, aligning it at the fullest part of your bust.
  3. Note the measurement.

Waist:

  1. Locate your natural waistline, about one inch above your belly button or the narrowest part of your torso.
  2. Wrap the tape around this area and ensure it’s snug but not tight.
  3. Record the measurement.

Hips:

  1. Position the tape around the widest part of your hips and buttocks.
  2. Ensure the tape lies flat and level, then measure.
  3. Write down the number.

Additional Tips:

  • Measure over undergarments you plan to wear with the dress, ensuring the tape is snug but not too tight.
  • If wearing shapewear or specialty undergarments, measure over those for better accuracy.
  • Many formal dresses run smaller than everyday clothing. If you’re between sizes, opt for the larger one to allow for alterations.
  • Keep in mind that sizing varies between designers; always refer to their specific charts.

How to Zipper a Dress

  1. Put the dress on and adjust it into a comfortable position.
  2. Before zipping, check for any hanger straps or strings that might obstruct the zipper.
  3. Attach the hook-and-eye closure first (if applicable), then begin zipping.
  4. Alternatively, you can zip first and secure the hook-and-eye afterward.
  5. Slowly pull the zipper upward, ensuring the fabric stays smooth and aligned.

Helpful Hints:

  • Many dresses feature concealed zippers. You may need assistance to hold the fabric together as you zip.
  • If the zipper gets stuck, try applying a small amount of soap or zipper wax to ease movement.

How to Lace a Dress

To properly lace a dress, ensure the person’s back remains straight by having them place their hands on their hips. Follow these steps:

  1. Thread the laces through the top loops on each side of the dress.
  2. After threading the first set of loops, pull the laces evenly to align them.
  3. Pass the lace through a loop on the left side.
  4. Move to the right side and thread the lace through a loop, skipping one.
  5. Continue alternating sides, skipping a loop on each pass.
  6. Once you’ve laced all skipped loops, go back and thread through the remaining loops on each side.
  7. Tighten the laces by pulling gently on the crisscross sections (visual examples can be helpful here).
  8. Tie a bow to secure the lacing.
  9. Tuck any excess lace inside the dress.
